“To give anything less than your best, is to sacrifice the gift.”
- Steve Prefontaine

Matías Elijah Rogers was a kind-hearted and beautiful soul that tragically passed away on June 16, 2021 at the age of 16. He was born in Walnut Creek, CA on April 16, 2005 to Ron Rogers and Leticia Padilla Rogers. Matías was raised in Brentwood, CA his entire life and created many fond memories for those who knew him.

From a young age, Matías had a knack for learning and excelling as a student. His ability to apply critical thinking to his learnings and his passion for treating others with dignity led to interests in history and tracing current events to their historical origins. Matías had plans to attend a top university with a strong academic reputation and great running program.

Matías was recognized as an athlete from a very young age and played a variety of sports until he found his passion in distance running. Beyond academics and athletics, Matías had an eclectic taste in music – from Spanish, 60's Soul and Rock to Rap and 80's hits. He was a movie buff who spent his evenings watching the classics. He enjoyed traveling throughout California with his family and experiencing different parts of the world including Mexico, Cuba and Hawaii. He embraced the racial identity of Mexican culture on his mother's side and his father's Irish roots. A budding chef who loved to explore new recipes, Matías could be found in the kitchen or outside on the grill creating a delicious dish. He made sure everyone got a plate before him, saying, "The chef always eats last."

Matías was a joy to everyone who came into his presence and genuinely cared about the well-being of others. He could carry on a conversation on a wide variety of topics, providing his unique perspective and offering a good laugh. He was a generous, caring and loving young man who will be incredibly missed by all who knew him.

Matías is survived by his mother, father, step-mother Stephanie, step-father Sineesh and siblings Amaya, Jackson, Jalen and Naeha.

Matías finished his race far too soon and we pray that he will rest eternally at peace. Run Free Matías!

“No matter how hard life hits you, keep running.”
— Matías Rogers
